Setting the Scene at the Biltmore Hotel London

The first priority lay in creating a backdrop in keeping with the Biltmore Hotel London. Fabulous Functions UK, based in the Cotswolds and specialising in timeless elegant floral designs set about creating the concept and colour palette for the table settings.

With the desire to create a setting that was both fresh and contemporary yet the height of elegance, Sandra designed a serpentine table setting with florals in a palette of tangerine and butter yellow through white to lilac. She created small arrangements in the colour scheme, arranged in an ombre style, meandering along the centre of the table. Florals placed on the floor created interest and added texture to the setting.

We partnered with William of Wedding Metal Art Prop Hire. A talented artist, William creates the most incredible and beautiful metal structures. He provided the halfmoon arches from which we suspended our floral chandeliers above the tables – we designed them to mirror the ombre colour way of the floral designs on the tables.

Then we repeated this theme in the concept for the stationery. Anna is the creative talent behind the luxury wedding stationers, Evelyn and Elliot Wedding Stationery. She designed the guest’s name cards in a half-moon form on seeded paper and featured the guest names, the wedding date, venue and the menu. A lot of information on a guest place card, you may think. But Anna accomplished the task with aplomb. She embellished the place cards with silken tassels in the ombre colour scheme. Creating the stationery suite on seeded paper that one can plant in one’s garden made a beautiful guest memento.

Photography and Film

It was our delight to work with Stuart Wood of Stuart Wood Weddings. His trademark fine art style of photography captured with perfection the beauty of the venue and the grace and elegance of our model bride and groom.

Said Stuart: ‘I wanted to use the elegance of this special place to its fullest extent, while making sure a definite ‘city vibe’ shone through in the imagery and showed clearly that we are in the very heart of Mayfair’

Meanwhile, Adam of Creative Spark Films lived up to the name, producing a beautiful and memorable recording of the shoot.

He wanted to capture everything at the Biltmore Hotel London using natural light wherever possible – often a challenge in the English winter! He made sure to expose for the highlights to give a darker and more cinematic look. That helped to elevate the footage to give a more mysterious, yet elegant vibe. Doing so also allowed him to focus the viewer’s eyes on the detailing of both the jewellery and the dress whilst maintaining flattering angles for our gorgeous models.

The Cake

What’s a wedding without cake? And they can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Claire and Dan of Peboryon are cake artists with an international reputation. They’re much in demand for their luxury wedding and event cake and sweet treats. This incredible duo creates visual feasts full of delicious flavours to delight both your palette and your eyes. It was a huge honour for us to have them as part of the amazing team on this styled shoot at the Biltmore.

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend

Well at the very least they’re elegant, timeless and beautiful. And Nina of HP Diamonds, a family-owned jewellery house has a deep passion for exceptional diamonds and craftsmanship. HP Diamond Jewellery specialises in exquisite and rare diamonds and gemstones, creating bespoke pieces that are a seamless blend of artistry and luxury.

Featured in the shoot, Lumière is a celebration of light and elegance, showcasing three stunning pieces: a ring, necklace, and earrings, crafted with colourless 2.5 carat marquise shaped diamonds and tapered baguettes. The marquise, known for its elongated form and regal heritage, symbolises elegance, ambition, and brilliance.

HP Diamond jewellery designed the Lumière collection with sleek, geometric lines, where each piece enhances the diamonds’ natural radiance, providing a perfect blend of a classic design and modern sophistication.

Our model bride wore several headpieces created by the ultra-talented Jayne at Camille Lux Accessories. Every piece that leaves Jayne’s atelier is hand-crafted and personalised for her clients. Jane weaves in any personal items and family heirlooms to create a personal design to complement your vibe, your gown, your colour palette and your joie de vivre.

Make-up and Hair

Johanna of Johanna Villarreal Brides, our hair stylist, and Bev of Makeupology Brides, our make-up artist collaborated to create Estelle’s flawless look for this shoot. They produced subtle makeup that enhanced and complemented Estelle’s natural beauty and dark glossy curls. Putting our model at at ease, between them they created for her a look of timeless elegance, full of glamour.

Johanna created a soft cushion of curls on which to nestle the beautiful headpieces created by Camille Accessories.

Gowns and Shoes

Sian of Shimmering Ivory, designer of exquisite bespoke wedding gowns and bridal couture, provided our model bride with her beautiful gown. It featured delicate lace appliqué, gorgeous beading and stunning Swarovski crystals.

As a couture designer specialising in bridal wear, each tailor-made couture gown used the finest French laces and luxury silks. All adorned with detailed embroidery and embellishments of Swarovski crystals and pearls to stunning effect. Your gown becomes part of your beautiful wedding journey.

Dianne Hassall of Di Hassall designer and creator of bespoke bridal footwear creates beautiful shoes for the bride who wants to stand out and stay true to the romance and elegance of their special day. Di provided a pair of stunning, soft, white toned shoes with delicate petal appliqué and adorned with pearls, secured with a silk ribbon.

The Groom

All eyes are on the bride! But let’s not forget the groom! Brigden’s of Derby provided his attire, comprised of an elegant Wilvorst navy blue dinner jacket with matching waistcoat and trousers. Completing the groom’s sartorial statement, we had a modern twist. A black tie and the florals in the form of a pocket square in the colour palette of the bridal bouquet.

Tableware and Table Linen

The Biltmore hotel London supplied the tableware. It featured their muted silver-toned charger plates complemented by their cutlery and glassware. And Allen’s Hire supplied the Kew range of linen. The silver-grey range formed the foundation for the table setting.

Collaborating with a talented team in love with what they do ensured the success of this styled shoot set in the luxury wedding venue, the Biltmore Hotel London. Aiming to inspire future wedding couples, the shoot exuded luxury, style, and sophistication. From the first flourish of the makeup brush and the tilt of the model’s head to the flicker of the candle lighting to the last click of the camera’s shutter, it was a team effort.

We met Kerry at a wedding fair held at Steam Museum, Swindon. I’m not sure how many people know that they can have their wedding reception in the Steam Museum. They can cater for a small intimate ‘do’ – right up to a mahoosive affair with all the bells and whistles!

A silver and grey wedding theme decor

Kerry chose a silver and grey theme for their wedding. And, as luck (or forethought) would have it, we had just the right accessories from our venue accessory hire department to help her and her fiancé bring their vision to life.

The silver and grey theme included silver-grey table linen, platinum satin sashes with a silver lace sash overlay for the chair decoration, and silver sequinned table runners.

White charger plates with a diamanté decorated rim completed the beautiful setting. Displaying amazing resourcefulness, Kerry’s brother sourced the tall glass mercury vases.

There’s no denying that the more high-tech the world becomes, the more many of us hanker for days gone by. The creators of the technology we use understand this and use icons, called skeuomorphs, that retain ornamental designs necessary in the original. So, when we save a Word document we click on an icon showing a floppy disk – how long have they been gone now? In a similar vein, we have an image of an old-fashioned waste bin for our electronic trash and an icon of an actual camera instead of the lens that our smartphones actually have. To name but a few.

This hankering for the past extends to clothing: many people like to dress in vintage style and interior design too.

What is Vintage?

We can define vintage as the period when an item was produced or how long something has existed and its recognised quality. Vintage can refer to an age between twenty and ninety-nine years. In comparison, antiques tend to be 100 years or older. The term retro can be applied to something with a vintage of fifteen to twenty years. Or – retro items can be new and yet be made in a retro style.

If you’ve got a passion for a particular period – or vintage – and are considering having your wedding themed in it, read on for some vintage wedding styling ideas.

In this post, we’re showcasing some ideas for the 20s, 30s, and 40s. The F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby, offers oodles of venue styling inspiration. As do the 1950s and 1960s – think Teddy Boys and Rockers and those full circle skirts for the former and Mary Quant style and Pop Art for the latter. And vinyl records for both those eras. Though they’ve made a big comeback! Who saw that coming?

Do remember that vintage is a good way to go with a travel-themed decor. Covid Created a Change

It does seem that the progression out of Covid-19 has wrought a change in weddings. As this Australian site argues: ‘There’s a move towards doing things your way, going bold in your wedding styling, and really pushing the envelope. Bucking the trends like this is a fine line to balance between incorporating the traditions that your family may want you to keep, and injecting your own personality and desires into your most special day.’

Let the Seasons Inspire You

Take inspiration from the season in which you’re getting married. For instance, if your wedding is set for late September through October then autumn is a burnt orange and bronze gift. Or, if you really want to be different, you could go all Hallowe’en. Either full on or with a few spooky accessories like the goblets in this picture below. But of course, if your wedding is in the spring but you love autumn colours then there’s nothing to stop you having an autumn-themed wedding as demonstrated in this blog post.

Not Only Seasons of the Year

Meanwhile, weddings in the Christmas and Valentine seasons also offer bold colour inspiration and a fab chance to use bright blooms in your bouquet and around the venue. Roses come in all shades of red and pink from a pale bush to a deep wine shade. Add in a little bit of green to set off the reds.

Do Think About Your Venue

It’s helpful, when thinking about your colour scheme, to take your venue into account. What do we mean? Well – if you’re set on a particular colour scheme then it’s likely that a venue with a neutral backdrop will work best. So, we’re talking barn conversions and similar. BUT – if you can be flexible about your colour choices then seek a venue that already has the colours you want, built into its décor in such elements as soft furnishings, walls, carpets, furniture. Even artworks. That will all contribute to a cohesive look.

The 60-30-10 Rule

The 60-30-10 rule is well-known to interior designers. It’s a decorating concept that interior decorators use to pull together a cohesive colour scheme. But of course, there’s nothing to say you can’t apply it to your wedding décor. If you use this decorating rule then your main wedding colour will comprise the 60% and will hold the whole thing together. That could be the bridesmaid’s dresses, the wedding stationery and the focal flower in your bouquet.

Then the 30% of the rule is your secondary colour. For this, think about the mens’ ties, napkins and your bouquet’s supporting flowers, along with centrepieces and any floral installations. And then to tie it all together is the 10% accent colour.

It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway, we’re here to help you to follow this rule if you want to – or to break it if you want to. Anything goes!

In Summary

Using bold wedding colours is a beautiful and interesting way to stand out and to take your guests’ breath away. As mentioned earlier, red, the colour of love, romance, and fire, are amazing choices for weddings.

Be Brave in Choosing Bold Colours in Venue Decor

But don’t hold back – pair your main colour choice with other bold colours rather than muted warm tones. That way you can develop a fresh and exciting colour palette.

Meeting Lucy and Sam at the Kings Head Hotel was so much like meeting old friends – because we’d communicated so much in the previous weeks. I had a good grasp of the vision they wanted to create and had with me many samples of the colour tones in the fabric they’d chosen with which to create a gorgeous rose gold wedding theme. 

I also had with me many samples of agate slices for them to choose from. They loved the ideas of what the French call “joindre l’utile à l’agréable”  – a lovely phrase that translates to “to combine the practical with pleasure.”

In this instance the agate slices would serve as both guest place names and guest favours. Sam and Lucy chose the natural colour agate slice as they were the perfect complement for the rose gold tones of the vertical drops they’d chosen for the chair decor.

Fast forward many months and the much-planned and much-anticipated wedding day arrived. They and we were super excited to see all the planning and preparations come to fruition in the rose gold wedding theme that Sam and Lucy had wanted to create.

Rose Gold Themed Wedding Décor

The décor was classically elegant in its simplicity and the rose gold theme suited the Kings Head Hotel wedding venue beautifully.

The personal touches were apparent everywhere in the decor and especially in the personalised post box for the guests to leave their card and gifts. And the table plan continued the rose gold theme of the wedding decor.

In my capacity as a Wiltshire-based venue stylist and as the mother of a groom with Covid-crashed wedding plans, I’ve got both second and first-hand experience of what so many couples are going through right now. 

As it happens, myself and two people with whom I work closely, at Wrag Barn golf club Nr Highworth, are supporting offspring whose wedding plans, Covid-19 sent into a tailspin. We’ve had to pull them back from crash-landing, keep them on track with their planning and help them hold-fast onto the joy and the thrill of the journey to making their vows.

With that experience in mind we set about creating and showcasing a stunning intimate wedding setting for an outdoor ceremony. The sort of ceremony and number of guests that an easing of the lockdown rules might allow for. This BBC article reports on potential changes to the current wedding rules coming quite soon.

Look at the setting we created in the image below and picture yourselves there with your very nearest and dearest, supporting you both and cherishing you both as you declare your love for and commitment to, each other. 

In this particular setting, you make your way around the trees to find this romantic scene before you. Those closest to you are waiting – as is your groom and the wedding officiant. . Seated on the cross-backed chairs, their first glimpse of you sends their hearts soaring skywards.

This bloom-bedecked archway is as much in perfect harmony with Wrag Barn’s meadow as you and your fiancé are each with the other. And you and the sunshine are as radiant as each other as you begin your walk along the cream aisle carpet towards your smiling husband-to-be.

The Wedding Breakfast

Now you’ve said ‘I do’ and the air rings with cheers and good wishes as you begin being Mr & Mrs. And what’s the first thing you do as husband and wife? Why, you preside over your wedding breakfast of course.

This simple yet stunning scene is in keeping with the setting and style of your ceremony location. We dressed the rustic table with a simple, cream chiffon runner and plain white crockery, with blooms and greenery in plain, clear, glass vessels to echo the blooms in the outdoor arch.

To add to the natural theme , we made an overhead canopy of lush green foliage with clear baubles hanging down. Tea-lights placed in the baubles add to the atmosphere and the magic.

The green canopy is a fabulous way to create an intimate wedding setting for your first meal together as a married couple.

A Versatile Setting

You can adapt both the outdoor ceremony setting and the wedding breakfast setting to accommodate the size of your ceremony and guest list. 

Equally you can transfer the outdoor ceremony setting inside your venue, should the capriciousness of the British weather throw a cloud or two over proceedings. This is the UK after all.

There really is no better way for wedding suppliers to show off their wares. Wedding fairs are an excellent way of giving prospective brides and grooms a sense of what you can offer them. Be it cakes, photography, video or venue dressing. Yet, as we’ve learned from experience, nothing is more effective or more heart-warming than a clutch of complementary wedding suppliers collaborating to recreate a wedding scenario that demonstrates what we can do.

In this post about Fabulous Functions UK in the media, we described our collaboration on a vintage themed photoshoot at Heythrop Park Resort on the edge of the Cotswolds. This time around the photoshoot action took place at The Bear Hotel in Hungerford, Berkshire. 

How it Happened

Earlier this year, Fabulous Functions UK collaborated with a group of wonderful suppliers to stage an open day at Hungerford’s Bear Hotel. Lots of couples came along and enjoyed meeting the suppliers there and booked us for their weddings.

So successful had the day been that the suppliers suggested to the hotel’s event’s manager, that we might use the hotel for a photoshoot. Vee and her term embraced the idea. They offered us the Riverside Suite for the purpose, and were excited about the transformation their gorgeous venue would undergo.

The Fabulous Functions UK team wanted to capture the joy of two people in love and who aren’t afraid to show it.

Our aim was to inspire couples to be more daring in their luxury wedding planning choices, by creating a luxurious and opulent décor that can be adapted to suit most venues. 

A Cascade of Colour

With rich, passionate burgundies and reds, through to coppers and golds to tones of blush pink and cream we created a vibrant colour range from the vibrant and bold to soft and delicate. All of it beautifully captured on camera by Barefoot Photography.

The First Step

The first thing we did was to get together with Louise of Wendy House Flowers. Together we devised a décor to stimulate the senses from the outset. We wanted the senses to dance a jig as they encountered the florals and the banquet style arrangement of guest tables. Louise, based in Lyneham, is a fantastic florist who encourages her clients to be brave in their choices.

For this photoshoot she created a gloriously wild bridal bouquet, full of colours and textures featuring grasses, clematis, wildflowers, roses and more.

The Décor

We decided on an ombre colour scheme, with shades ranging from rich burgundies full of passion, through to coppers and golds, all coming to rest on the sweetheart table with a cascading floral garland in tones of blush pink and cream.

A flower cloud is such a statement piece! Bringing not a drop of rain but lashing of joy. Creating a golden halo above our couple. The cloud was created with a selection of mellow golden branches and romantic cream roses, pampas grass, ferns, gypsophila, roses, hydrangeas and much much more.

An Ombre Themed Wedding Décor Inspiration Table Setting

A picture paints a thousand words. The images from our photoshoot at the Bear Hotel in Hungerford did just that. It shows an opulent venue setting created with gold-accented glassware and cutlery from Simon of Event Hire UK.
Even the agate slice details on the little golden glass boxes mirrored the ombre theme of the decor.

The Pièce de Résistance

I always advise my brides not to hide their wedding cake, and by extension, the cake cutting ceremony, in a dark corner. Rather make a feature of it. And how better to make a statement to remember than with a Fabulous Functions UK flower wall?

Our fabulous peach and cream-toned flower wall made a wonderful backdrop for this glorious seven-tier crystal cake tower from Fay’s Fairy Cakes.
